The authors present two finite element methods for parameter estimation of groundwater transport systems in the regions over which a concentration front has passed. It is possible to identify the spatial distribution of both the dispersion coefficients and the velocity components provided the distributions of the head and the transient mass concentration are available. An integration-based method is presented which avoids numerical difficulties connected with direct solution.
