Results on the cohomology of solvable Lie algebras are achieved in this paper and are then employed to obtain Lie algebra analogues of some theorems on finite groups due to Baer, Gaschütz, Ruppert, and Iwasawa. In particular, it is shown that for a solvable Lie algebra \(L\), \(H^n(L, A) = H_n\), \((L, A) = 0\) for all \(n\) if \(A\) is an irreducible \(L\)-module whose centralizer is \(0\). Theorems are also proved concerning homology and cohomology of nilpotent and supersolvable Lie algebras. The results on cohomology are then used to prove that a solvable Lie algebra \(L\) splits over a minimal ideal \(A\) if \(A\) is its own centralizer in \(L\). Then also all complements of \(A\) are conjugate. Defining \(\Phi(L)\), the Frattini subalgebra of \(L\), to be the intersection of the maximal subalgebras of \(L\), it is proved that an ideal \(A\) of \(L\) is nilpotent if \(A/B\) is nilpotent, where \(B\) is an ideal of \(L\) contained in \(A\cap \Phi(L)\). Also \(L\) is supersolvable if \(L/M\) is supersolvable, where \(M\) is an ideal of \(L\) contained in \(\Phi(L)\). Finally, if \(L\) is a solvable Lie algebra, the conditions (i) that every maximal subalgebra have codimension \(1\), and (ii) that all maximal chains of subalgebras have the same length are each equivalent to the supersolvability of \(L\).
