    Let \(B_ n\) be the unit ball in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\) and let f: \(B_ n\to B_ k\), \(k>n\), be a proper holomorphic map. The authors give conditions under which f extends holomorphically across \(\partial B_ n\) and hence, using a result of \textit{F. Forstneric} [Invent. Math. 95, No.1, 31-62 (1989; Zbl 0633.32017)], is rational. (Forstneric showed that if f is sufficiently smooth up to \(\partial B_ n\) then it is rational.) The authors localize things so that N is a neighbourhood of a point \(p\in \partial B_ n\), f: \(N\cap B_ n\to B_ k\), and \(\| f(z)\| \to 1\) when \(z\to N\cap \partial B_ n\). They show that if there exist a holomorphic function q and a holomorphic map P on N (not necessarily polynomials) such that \(f=q^{-1}P\) on \(N\cap \partial B_ n\) then f extends holomorphically across \(N\cap \partial B_ n\). It follows that a rational proper map from \(B_ n\) to \(B_ k\) is holomorphic on a neighborhood of \(\bar B_ n\), a result also obtained by Pincuk (unpublished).
