Let \(p:W^{n+1}\to D^*\) be a proper map from the \(n+1\)-dimensional analytic variety \(W^{n+1}\) onto the punctured disk \(D^*\) which is everywhere of rank one. Consider the monodromy \(\phi:V\to V\) of this family, where \(V=p^{-1}(1)\) (which can be defined uniquely up to isotopy class). The author is interested in four types of topological triviality of the monodromy \(\phi\), and illustrates these on three interesting examples. For instance the first one is a family \(\{V_ t\}_{t\in D}\) over the disk D such that \(V_ t\) is a smooth simply- connected surface for every \(t\in D^*\), and \(V_ 0\) is the union of two smooth surfaces meeting transversally along a rational curve with non-trivial self-intersection. Then one shows that some finite power of \(\phi\) is concordant to the identity (i.e. there is a diffeomorphism \(H:V\times [0,2\pi]\to V\times [0,2\pi]\) which is identity on one end and a finite power of \(\phi\) on the other).
