    The following theorem (and some generalizations) is proved. There exist positive constants \(\beta\) (\(\beta\leq 1/2\)) and \(\delta\) with the following property. If \(g\) is a completely multiplicative function, \(| g(n)| < 1\) \((n\in\mathbb{N})\), \[ \limsup_x \sum_{x^\beta < p < x}{| g(p)-1|\over p} < \delta, \text{ and } \liminf_x \sum_{x/2<n<x}| g(n+1)-g(n)| = 0, \] then \(g(n)=1\) for all \(n\). In the proof some ideas of \textit{A. Hildebrand} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 103, No. 3, 389--398 (1988; Zbl 0663.10047)] and \textit{G. Halász}'s mean value theory [Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hung. 19, 365--403 (1968; Zbl 0165.05804)] are used. [For part V, cf. ibid. 45, 379--380 (1985; Zbl 0574.10010).]
