New simpler proofs of basic theorems in Quillen's algebraic K-theory of exact categories are given. The paper includes the cofinality theorem, the resolution theorem, the devissage theorem, and a localization theorem, starting each time from a basic fibration sequence up-to- homotopy constructed by Waldhausen as a part of his treatment of the K- theory of categories with cofibrations and weak equivalences.
