There are many flow situations when diffusion works against the gradient. These include stratified and rotating flows. These flows cannot be handled using conventional turbulence models. Here the authors use data from direct numerical simulations to describe the phenomenon of countergradient fluxes in homogeneous stratified turbulence, and propose a structural model to explain the countergradient fluxes.
