In the study of finitely generated modules over a valuation domain R, a main problem is to decide if two different decompositions of a finitely generated R-module into indecomposable summands are isomorphic. This problem is solved if the valuation domain R is archimedean. In this case, if X is an indecomposable finitely generated R-module, then End(X) is a local ring. This result leads to the uniqueness of decompositions into indecomposable summands, up to isomorphisms. For an arbitrary valuation domain R, another result in this direction is that a finitely generated R-module decomposes in a unique way, up to isomorphism, into indecomposable two-generated summands. If R is not archimedean, there exist, in general, indecomposable finitely generated R-modules X such that End(X) is not local. This leads to the suspect that, for a suitable valuation domain R, there exists a finitely generated R-module which admits two non-isomorphic decompositions into indecomposable summands. The purpose of this paper is to get information about the decompositions of a finitely generated R-module into uniform summands.
