Let R be a ring which satisfies the standard polynomial identity \(S_{2n}=0\). Does the matrix ring \(M_ 2(R)\) satisfy \(S_{4n}=0?\) The Amitsur-Levitzki theorem shows that the answer to this question is ''Yes'' if \(R=M_ n(C)\) for some commutative ring C. However, an example is given here of a finite-dimensional algebra R which satisfies \(S_ 6=0\) but \(M_ 2(R)\) does not satisfy \(S_{12}=0\).
