For the last half a century a number of approaches to construct a theory unifying the behavior of ergodic averages and reversed martingales has been proposed by \textit{M. Jerison} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 10, 531--539 (1959; Zbl 0102.13401)], \textit{G.-C.Rota} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris 252, 2064--2066 (1961; Zbl 0102.13603)], \textit{A.} and \textit{C. Ionesu Tulcea} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 107, 107--124 (1963; Zbl 0119.32701)], \textit{A. M. Vershik} (1960s), and the author [Math. Notes 64, No. 2, 266--269 (1998); translation from Mat. Zametki 64, No. 2, 311--314 (1998; Zbl 0922.60045)]. The present survey gives a comparative analysis of these approaches. The author discusses also a new approach to this problem as well.
