In a previous paper [\textit{H. P. Petersson} and \textit{M. L. Racine}, Indag. Math., New Ser. 7, 343-365 (1996; Zbl 0872.17029)], the authors used an elementary approach to the Serre-Rost invariant that is related to the classification of the exceptional Jordan algebras or Albert algebras, which is valid in all characteristics except \(3\). In the present paper, intimately related to the previous one, the authors introduce some changes in the cohomological setting that allow them to show that the elementary approach to this invariant modulo \(3\) survives in characteristic \(3\).
