Let \(T\) be a regular semigroup and let \(S\) be a regular subsemigroup of \(T\) which contains an inverse of each element of \(T\). A class of maps from \(T\) to \(S\), pointwise fixed on \(S\), is introduced to be known as split maps. The relevant definitions are complicated, but it is shown that if \(T\) admits such a map then the structure of \(T\) can be described in terms of that of \(S\). The main result characterizes the construction of all split maps \(\theta: T\to S\). The special case where \(S\) is a quasi-ideal of \(T\) is examined affording the recovery of an embedding theorem due to \textit{D. B. McAlister} and \textit{R. B. McFadden} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 34, 459-474 (1983; Zbl 0537.20033)] for regular semigroups with a quasi-ideal inverse transversal. The final section characterizes so-called split coextensions of a regular semigroup by rectangular bands.
