There are several authors having dealt with the question of how fast the coefficients of trigonometric null series can converge to zero. Similar problems arise with systems different from the trigonometric one, such as the Haar or Walsh system. In the first part of the present paper the author solves a specific problem in this field for Walsh series. He proves: Let \(\epsilon_ n\downarrow 0\) and \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=0}\epsilon^ 2_ n=+\infty.\) Then there exists a set \(E\subset [0,1]\) with \(\mu E=0\) such that: 1. There exists a series \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=0}a_ nW_ n(t)\) with coefficients \(| a_ n| \leq \epsilon_ n\) which converges to zero everywhere outside E, and \(\sum | a_ n| >0.\) 2. If \(| b_ n| =o(\epsilon_ n)\) and the series \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=0}b_ nW_ n(t)\) converges to zero everywhere outside E except some countable set then \(b_ n=0\) for every n. It is shown that additional conditions have to be imposed in order to prove a similar result in the trigonometric case. In the second part of the paper U(S)-sets are defined and investigated. On that basis a result of Shapiro's in the setting of Walsh functions is carried over to the trigonometric case.
