A mesh generation approach that allows the local modification of meshes of simplices is discussed. The generation and modification, especially refinement and derefinement, of sequences of nested irregular grids, as needed for multigrid algorithms in the adaptive finite-element setting, can be managed. It is shown that in 2 dimensions the meshes constructed are nondegenerate and smooth. Experimental results for the refinement of grids are presented in the 3-dimensional situation.
