Following \textit{R. Howe} [\(L^ 2\) duality for stable reductive dual pairs (1982)] the Weil representation gives rise to a pairing \(\tau'\leftrightarrow \tau\) between ``one half of'' the discrete series for the symplectic group \(\mathrm{Sp}(W)\), where \(\dim W=2m,\) and its double covering group, and certain special unitary representations of \(\mathrm{O}(p,q),\) where \(2m<p\) and \(2m<q\). It is quite natural to conjecture that these unitary representations are isomorphic to certain of the Zuckerman derived functor bundles. This conjecture is made precise and related to a pairing of certain elliptic orbits of the two groups on the real dual of their Lie algebras. The conjecture is proved under a regularity condition on the parameter \(\lambda\) involved. As a corollary it follows that certain of the derived functor modules are unitary. This result has later been proved in much more generality, see \textit{D. Vogan} [Ann. Math. (2) 120, 141--187 (1984; Zbl 0561.22010)] and \textit{N. Wallach} [Invent. Math. 78, 131--141 (1984; Zbl 0547.22008)]. Even though the subject requires many technicalities, the paper is very well written and the different ingredients involved are explained very clearly.
