    R. Ware defined the class of C-fields using a condition from quadratic form theory. A detailed discussion and many equivalent definitions of C- fields are contained in [\textit{R. Ware}, Pac. J. Math. 76, 541-564 (1978; Zbl 0405.12019)]. The authors extend these investigations using Galois theoretic methods. They show that a field F is of class C if and only if certain very small two-groups do not appear as Galois groups of extensions of F. If F is a C-field and has at least 8 square classes then the same kind of condition can be used to characterize the level of F.
