The authors highlight the ability of \(\nu\)-splines introduced by \textit{G. Nielson} [in Computer aided geometric design, eds. R. E. Barnhill and R. F. Riesenfeld, pp. 209-235, Academic Press New York (1974)] to construct \(G^2\)-continuous spatial interpolants that conform, to the largest possible extent, with the shape-preservation criteria adopted by \textit{P. D. Kaklis} and \textit{M. I. Karavelas} [IMA J. Numer. Anal. 17, No. 3, 373-419 (1997; Zbl 0928.65019)]. The authors thus obtain a fully automatic algorithm that is capable of providing after a finite number of iterations, appropriate values for the \(\nu\)-parameters that determine shape preserving \(G^2\)-cubic spline interpolants. The performance of the approach presented here is also tested on two data sets, one of synthetic nature and the other of industrial interest.
