The author treats a delaminated circular film as a thin circular plate clamped to the substrate at the boundary of the delaminated zone. The axisymmetric postbuckling response for large film deflections under the action of in-plane compression is investigated by using a power series method to solve the von Kármán nonlinear equations for axisymmetric deformations of circular plates. Then the problem of asymmetric bifurcation-buckling of the film from the axisymmetric large-deflection equilibrium state is studied by applying simultaneously Fourier series and power series to the solution of von Kármán nonlinear equations for asymmetric deformations of circular plates. Finally, the author investigates the energy release rates related to the two stages of buckling deformation, and demonstrates that the energy release rate corresponding to the asymmetric postbuckling deformation is much larger than that corresponding to the axisymmetric postbuckling stage.
