The paper presents a very general approach to decomposition theorems of Yosida-Hewitt type for measures or linear operators into a ``normal'' and an ``antinormal'' part. The main aim of the paper is to obtain a deeper description of the ``antinormal'' part of this decomposition, which allows many important applications. The paper also gives a survey about Yosida-Hewitt type theorems.
