The paper proposes a technique to obtain error indicators for the boundary element method with Hermitian elements. In order to obtain nodal values of the solution and of the tangential derivative the approximate solution is obtained from the discretization of a usual boundary integral equation and its tangential derivative. The difference quotient of the nodal values of the solution is compared with the computed value of the tangential derivative. The authors show for some numerical examples that this difference can be used as error indicator for adaptive mesh refinement.
