The generalized Riccati equation with analytic coefficients is considered. The author finds a condition sufficient for the existence of a solution in the form of formal continued fractions; they agree, roughly speaking, with power series of the solution, up to a given number of terms. This condition depends on the form of the Taylor series of the coefficients. Under some assumptions, the formulae for the coefficients of the formal continued fractions can be given. In many cases it is possible to transform the original Riccati equation by a certain linear-rational function to the form suitable for the application of these formulae. Another possibility is to apply a rational transformation in order to get a Padé approximation of the solution.
