Let \(\Lambda\) be an Artin algebra and \(S=\Lambda e/\text{rad }\Lambda e\) be the non-injective simple \(\Lambda\)-module associated to a primitive idempotent \(e\). The number of indecomposable direct summands of the middle term of the almost split sequence starting at \(S\) is determined in terms of numbers calculated directly from the algebra. The number of these direct summands which are projective is also determined. In the case where \(\Lambda\) is self-injective the number of indecomposable summands of \(\text{rad }\Lambda e/\text{soc }\Lambda e\) is thus determined.
