The author studies the periodic problem for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation by a numerical energy method initiated by \textit{B. Fornberg} and \textit{G. B. Whitham} [Philos. Trans. R. Soc. London, Ser. A 289, 373-404 (1978; Zbl 0384.65049)]. One shows that it is possible to run near constant amplitude wave trains with the energy conserving method even if the time step \(\tau > \tau_ c:= \tau^{-1}\Delta x^ 2\), that is, no high frequency modulational instabilities occur. Some numerical tests and diagrams are also appended.
