The paper investigates branching processes in classical string theory by considering a string with self-intersection as consisting of two strings that obey their own dynamics. The worldsheet is parametrized by a Riemann surface \(M\) with a degenerate semi-Riemannian metric \(\eta\), whose conformal group is identified. A Hamiltonian formalism for the description of branching processes is proposed and finally a classical version of Krichever-Novikov theory is discussed.
