The authors present an explicit derivation of a \(B\)-spline like basis in general functions spaces. They stipulate a set of design objectives (a given degree of continuity, least feasible order for the given continuity requirement, shape invariance under translation) and then derive functions that meet these objectives. The expressions for the spline basis are derived in an elementary manner by explicitly solving a system of linear equations. Whenever such a basis exists it is essentially unique.
