The authors consider the problem of multivariate rational interpolation on a set of interpolation points indexed by a subset \(I\) of \({\mathcal N}^ 2\) satisfying the inclusion property (for notational convenience they do not treat the case of \(n\) variables). They specifically study the cases of rank-deficiency of the homogeneous system of linear equations for the denominator-coefficients that lead to the existence of rational functions \(p_ 1(x,y)/q_ 1(x,y)\) and \(p_ 2(x,y)/q_ 2(x,y)\) that both satisfy the linearized interpolation problem but for which \(p_ 1/q_ 1\neq p_ 2/q_ 2\) (when written in their lowest terms). The case of loss of interpolation conditions (unattainable points) is not treated here. The main result of the form of sets of points in \({\mathcal N}^ 2\) leading to the same unique (minimal) solution to the multivariate interpolation problem is compared with the known results for the univariate case.
