The hyper-Kähler quotient construction in [\textit{N. J. Hitchin, A. Karlhede, U. Lindström} and \textit{M. Roček}, Commun. Math. Phys. 108, 535-589 (1987; Zbl 0612.53043)] allows to construct many nontrivial examples of hyper-Kähler metrics from a flat quaternionic vector space \(H^d\) with an action of a subgroup \(G\) of \(\text{ Sp}(d)\). The authors investigate which hyper-Kähler metrics may be constructed in this way, in the case that \(G\) is a torus, i.e. they study a class of hyper-Kähler quotient of \(H^d\) by subtori of the torus \(T^d\), called toric hyper-Kähler manifolds [\textit{R. Goto}, Int J. Mod. Phys. A 7, Suppl. 1A, 317-338 (1992; Zbl 0924.53023)]. More precisely, the authors study topological and metric properties of such manifolds, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a hyper-Kähler quotient \(M\) of a quaternionic space by the above torus actions to be smooth or an orbifold. If \(M\) is smooth, they prove an analogue of the convexity theorem for compact toric varieties, showing that the hyper-Kähler momemt map for the induced torus action on \(M\) is a surjection onto \(R^{3n}\). They show that the topology of toric hyper-Kähler orbifolds \(M\) depends only on the torus used to obtain \(M\) and not on the momentum map and identify the homotopy type of the hyper-Kähler quotients as that of a union of finitely many toric varietes intersecting along toric subvarieties. For any of Delzant's toric varieties [\textit{T. Delzant}, Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 116, 315-339 (1988; Zbl 0676.58029)] they prove that the cotangent bundle carries a natural hyper-Kähler metric whose restriction to the zero section is the Kähler metric on the variety \(X\) and that this hyper-Kähler metric is complete only when \(X\) is a product of projective spaces. Finally, they determine a Kähler potential for the hyper-Kähler metric and they give an explicit expression for the local form of the metric in the framework of [\textit{H. Pedersen} and \textit{Y. S. Poon}, Commun. Math. Phys. 117, 569-580 (1988; Zbl 0648.53028)].
