The concept of preopen sets due to the reviewer with \textit{I. A. Hasanein} and \textit{S. N. El-Deeb} [Indian J. Pure and Appl. Math. 13, 1119-1123 (1982; Zbl 0499.54009)] is generalized to the fuzzy setting. Further, fuzzy separation axioms are introduced and investigated with the help of fuzzy preopen sets.
