The paper deals with finite and ``continuum'' games (understood as games with arbitrarily many players, but with characteristic function only defined for finite coalitions). The core has been characterized in terms of the reduced game property, so called converse reduced property (expressed in terms of two-person coalitions) and a condition named pairwise optimality (expressing Pareto optimality and individual rationality in two-person games). The authors first deal in detail with the case with side payments and then, more briefly, with the case without side payments. The paper is related to earlier papers by Peleg and Kaneko and Wooders.
