Cluster categories are natural representation-theoretic models for cluster variables in cluster algebras. In this paper the authors show that also the matrix mutation for cluster algebras has a nice interpretation within cluster categories in terms of the associated cluster-tilted algebras. Cluster-tilted algebras are endomorphism algebras of tilting objects in cluster categories and the authors show that the quivers of the cluster-tilted algebras arising from a given cluster category are exactly the quivers corresponding to the exchange matrices of the associated cluster algebra. Altogether, this means that all the major ingredients involved in the construction of acyclic cluster algebras have interpretations in the cluster category.
