    The authors give definitions of upper and lower functions for a generalized solution of the problem \[ \left(\varphi\left(t, x(t), x^{\prime}(t)\right)\right)^{\prime}=F\left(t, x, x(t), x^{\prime}(t)\right), \qquad H_{1} x=h_{1}, \qquad H_{2} x=h_{2}. \] Here $H_{1}, H_{2} \in C(C(I, \mathbb{R}), \mathbb{R}) $ and $h_{1}, h_{2} \in \mathbb{R}$, and $\varphi \in C\left(I \times \mathbb{R}^{2}, \mathbb{R}\right)$ and $F : I \times B B^{\wedge}(I, \mathbb{R}) \times \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$. Here $B B^{\wedge}(I, \mathbb{R})$ is the set of functions whose derivative exists for any $t \in I$, is continuous, and can take the values $-\infty$ and $+\infty$, the function $\varphi\left(t, x_{0}, x_{1}\right)$ strictly increases in $x_{1}$ for fixed $t$ and $x_{0}$ and the function $ F\left(t, x, x_{0}, x_{1}\right) $ is continuous for fixed $t \in I $ in the norm $\|x\|_{L}+\left|x_{1}\right|$, and measurable for fixed $x \in B B^{\wedge}(I, \mathbb{R}), x_{0} \in \mathbb{R}$, and $x_{1} \in \mathbb{R}$. Moreover, for any $N>0$ there exists a function $ g \in L(I,[0, \infty))$ such that $\left|F\left(t, x, x_{0}, x_{1}\right)\right| \leq g(t)$ for $\|x\|_{L}+\left|x_{0}\right| \leq\left|x_{1}\right| \leq N $. Moreover, they prove that the Dirichlet problem for this equation has a generalized solution lying between the lower and upper functions, and present conditions for the existence of a solution of the previously considered boundary value problem. \par It is also proved how the results obtained for this boundary value problem can be used to study the solvability of higher-order boundary value problems. Some new conditions for the compactness of the solutions are also given.
