Let \(k\) be an algebraicaly closed field and \({\mathcal C}\) a connected Noetherian Ext-finite hereditary abelian \(k\)-category with a Serre functor. Using the classification of such categories due to the authors [\textit{I. Reiten} and \textit{M. Van den Bergh}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 15, No. 2, 295-366 (2002)], they describe the categories \({\mathcal C}\) with finitely generated Grothendieck group \(K_0({\mathcal C})\). Moreover, it is proved that \(K_0({\mathcal C})\) is finitely generated if and only if \({\mathcal C}\) has a tilting object or \({\mathcal C}\) is the category of finite-dimensional representations of the quiver \(\widetilde {A}_n\) with cyclic orientation for some \(n<\infty \). For this, in order to construct a tilting object in the category \(\text{coh}({\mathcal O})\) of coherent modules over a sheaf \({\mathcal O}\) of hereditary orders over \(\mathbb{P}^1\), a new criterion for an object to be a tilting object is shown, and exceptional collections of modules over a hereditary order over a discrete valuation ring are produced.
