Let \(V\) be an \(n\)-dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field \(K\) of characteristic \(0\) and let \(\mathcal{B}\) be the space of bilinear forms \(f: V\times V\to K\). The authors show that any \(f\in\mathcal{B}\) admits an orthogonal direct decomposition into indecompodable bilinear forms, and they describe those forms. They investigate the decomposition of a bilinear form \(f\in\mathcal{B}\) into a sum of a semisimple form and a null form and call this the Jordan decomposition for bilinear forms. They study in particular how the Jordan decomposition of \(f\) relates to the indecomposable bilinear forms in a suitable direct decomposition.
