In this paper a source of finitely generated simple groups with non-elementary amenability properties is proposed. The work is essentially concerned with two basic results. The first refers to the finitely generated property of certain topological full groups of Cantor minimal systems. Theorem 1. Consider a minimal faithful action of \(Z^d\) on a Cantor set conjugate to the action on a closed \(Z^d\)-invariant subset of \(A^{Z^d}\) for some finite alphabet \(A\). Then, the commutator subgroup of the topological full group \([[Z^d]]\) is finitely generated. The second result refers to certain groups \(\mathcal{P}\) associated to the Penrose tiling; precisely, the group of all permutations of the tiles defined by local rules. Theorem 2. The derived subgroup of \(\mathcal{P}\) is simple and finitely generated.
