    Die Berechnung von dynamischen Systemen erfolgt nach einer Diskretisierung in Finite Elemente entweder durch numerische Integration eines Systems gewöhnlicher Differentialgleichungen oder durch angepaßte Approximationsverfahren für eine entsprechend formulierte Variationsaufgabe. Ausgehend von dem Hamiltonschen bzw. Lagrangeschen Formalismus, leiten die Verfasser eine generische Variationsgleichung ab, die auch Unstetigkeiten in den Zustandsgrößen berücksichtigt. Für die Zustandsgrößen und die Testfunktionen werden mit Hilfe eines dem erwarteten Lösungsverlauf angepaßten orthogonalen Funktionensystems Näherungen angesetzt, so daß die Integrale der Variationsaufgabe aufgrund der Skalarprodukteigenschaften der Ansatzfunktionen gelöst werden und sich ein nichtlineares Gleichungssystem für die Koeffizienten der ausgewählten Funktionen ergibt. Dieses sogenannte Bubnov-Galerkin Verfahren liefert bei der numerischen Berechnung hinsichtlich Genauigkeit und Stabilität bessere Ergebnisse als die diskreten Integrationsverfahren.
