There are 6 orientable closed flat (Euclidean) 3-manifolds, 5 with finite cyclic holonomy and one with holonomy \({\mathbb{Z}}_ 2\oplus {\mathbb{Z}}_ 2\), which is called the Hantzsche-Wendt manifold M. We explicitly compute the outer automorphism group Out \(\pi\) \({}_ 1M\) of its fundamental group which is also the group of affine diffeomorphisms of M (resp. isometries for a suitable flat structure). As the Hantzsche-Wendt manifold is the 3- fold resp. 2-fold cyclic branched covering of the figure-8-knot resp. of the Borromean rings, as a consequence we get a quick algebraic computation of the symmetry groups of the figure-8-knot and the Borromean rings.
