The subject of the paper is the computation of a potential on a closed surface near and surrounding the heart, given the potential on a part of the body and the geometry of heart and thorax. In mathematical terms this amounts to the solution of a Cauchy problem for a second order elliptic problem, which means that an ill-posed problem has to be treated. The authors first discuss the mathematical model where Dirichlet boundary data on the surface surrounding the heart is unknown. The operator mapping these data to be observed data is shown to be continuous between suitable Sobolev spaces and has dense range in \(L_ 2.\) The recovery of the Dirichlet data is formulated as an optimal control problem, it is a Tikhonov-Phillips regularization where the regularization operator is the gradient or the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Numerically the stabilized problem is solved with finite elements, and error estimates are given. The regularization parameter is determined with Morozov's discrepancy principle. The method is tested on simulated and measured data.
