The involutory dimension of an involution poset \((P,\leq,{}')\) is defined as the minimum cardinality of a family of linear extensions of \(\leq\), involutory with respect to the involution \('\) (which is a unary mapping from \(P\) to itself such that (i) \(x'' = x\), and (ii) \(x\leq y\) implies \(y'\leq x'\)), whose intersection is the ordering \(\leq.\) The authors study this notion in more details. It is shown that the involutory dimension exists iff any pair of isotropic elements are orthogonal. This notion is illustrated by many examples, in particular with those being orthomodular posets or lattices.
