The author considers a local \(C^ 2\)-map in a Banach space, which is assumed to have a saddle fixed point at zero. He estimates the speed of the convergence to the stable manifold of the preimages \(g^{-k}(H)\), \(k=1,2,...\), of a transversal H to the unstable manifold. It turns out that the naturally defined slopes of tangent vectors to \(g^{-k}(H)\) tend exponentially to zero. This study is motivated by applications to a nonlocal bifurcation problem, contained in a preprint by the author [``Bifurcation from a saddle connection in functional differential equations: an approach with inclination lemmas'', Preprint (1986)].
