A topological complex vector bundle \(E\) of rank \(r\) on a projective compact complex surface \(X\) admits a holomorphic structure if and only if its first Chern class \(c_1(E)\) is of type \((1,1)\), i.e. \(c_1(E)\) is an element of the Néron-Severi group \(NS(X)\). Moreover \(E\) admits stable holomorphic structures with respect to a fixed polarization on \(X\) if \(c_2(E)\) is sufficiently large compared to \(r\) and \(c^2_1(E)\). The situation is much more complicate for non-algebraic \(X\), and the article deals with a specific situation where the surface \(X\) is a non-algebraic torus and \(r=2\). It is shown that \(E\) admits a holomorphic structure if and only if \(c_1(E)\in NS(X)\) and \(4c_2(E)\leq c_1^2(E)\). In the following assume that \(E\) admits a holomorphic structure and let \(\omega\) be a Kähler class on \(X\) with \(c_1(E)\cdot\omega=0\). Then the condition \(c_1^2(E)=\max\{(c_1(E)+2b)^2 |b\in NS(X), b\cdot\omega=0\}\) is sufficient for the existence of a holomorphic structure on \(X\) stable with respect to \(\omega\), except in the cases \(c_1(E)=0\) and \(c_2(E)\in\{0,1\}\) or \(c^2_1(E)=-2\) and \(c_2(E)=0\). In the latter cases all holomorphic structures on \(E\) are unstable with respect to \(\omega\). If \(c_1^2(E)=\max\{(c_1(E)+2a)^2 |a\in NS(X)\}\) then \(E\) admits an irreducible holomorphic structure in the sense that this structure is without any coherent analytic subsheaves of rank one, except again in the cases \(c_1(E) =0\) and \(c_{2}(E)\in\{0,1\}\) or \(c^2_1(E)=-2\) and \(c_2(E)=0\), where all holomorphic structures on \(E\) are reducible. The author describes in detail the concept of quaternionic deformations of complex structures which plays a main role for the proof of the above results.
