Let \(w\) be a weight function on \((-1,1)\) and \(\{p_n\}\) be the corresponding sequence of orthogonal polynomials. Then the generalized Christoffel functions are defined by \[ \lambda_m (w, p, t)= \min_{p\in {\mathcal P}_{m-1}} \int^1_{-1} \Biggl|{{p(x)} \over {p(t)}} \Biggr|^p w(x) dx, \] where \({\mathcal P}_m\) is the set of algebraic polynomials whose degree is at most \(m\). The paper gives upper and lower bounds for \(\lambda_m (w, p, t)\) related to a Ditzian-Totik generalized weight. As an application, an error estimate of a Gauss quadrature formula in \(L_1\)-weighted norm is derived.
