Hier werden historische Fakten aufgezählt, die seit Archimedes in ihrer zeitlichen Abfolge zur Begründung der Stabilitäts- und der Elastizitätstheorie und schließlich zu den für die mechanische Festigkeitslehre relevanten Erkenntnissen führten; es geht u.a. darum, jedwede Behauptung zu vermeiden, ``which consists in interpreting a long period as an explanation for a momentary transformation'' (S. 589).
