Let \(M\) be a manifold whose Yamabe invariants are all negative. Then for any metric conformal class \(C\) of \(M\), one may take the appropriately scaled metric \(\widetilde g\) in \(C\) of constant scalar curvature \(-1\) and denote \(\text{Vol} (C)= \text{Vol} (\widetilde g)\). The set \(\text{Vol} (C)\) is said to be the Yamabe spectrum of \(M\). The author proves that if \(M^3\) is a compact, oriented, homologically atoroidal three-manifold with \(\pi_2 (M)=0\) and \(H_1(M, \mathbb{R})=0\), then \(\sup_C \text{Vol} (C)< \infty\). Using this estimate, the author demonstrates new global obstructions for the Nash isometrical immersions \(M^3 \to N\) of arbitrary codimension, which incude a nontrivial map in the first homology.
