The authors consider boundary value and initial-boundary value problems for quasilinear elliptic, nonlinear parabolic and linear hyperbolic equations with discontinuous solutions, and use the finite element method to construct approximate convergent solutions. The results are applied to a static plane linear elasticity problem with a prescribed pressure on a cut, to a dynamic problem for an orthotropic elastic body of revolution, and to an eigenvalue problem with discontinuous eigenfunctions.
