This paper is a detailed review paper about software engineering methodologies for numerical computations, starting with historical remarks, characterizing the typical problems in writing user-oriented software: ''The software, which embodies the most sophisticated numerical procedures for a wide range of nonlinear problems, also tends to contain the weakest user-interface.'' It describes current software development methodologies, the growing impact of tools and architecture, and looks at a lot of existing tools roughly. At least it came to the conclusion ''There is no 'standard' methodology for the development of numerical software.''
