The author proves the following affine analogue of the well known result of \textit{E. A. Ruh} and \textit{J. Vilms} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 149, 569-573 (1970; Zbl 0199.561)]: Let x be an equiaffine hypersurface with regular equiaffine Weingarten operator B. Then the author gives a necessary and sufficient condition that the equiaffine Gauss map is harmonic. One corollary given is the following result: Let x and B be as above. Then x is an affine sphere if and only if the Gauss map is harmonic and the equiaffine mean curvature is constant.
