In the paper linear, continuous-time, finite-dimensional control systems with constant coefficients are considered. The definition of state observer is given. Next, based on a reduced-order state observer, a new observer parametrization is proposed and discussed in detail. Using observer parametrization, the estimation error dynamics with respect to the input disturbances is derived. A procedure for optimal robust observer with a given performance specification is also proposed. Moreover, an illustrative numerical example which describes the parametrization procedure is also presented. It should be pointed out that similar problems can be found e.g. in the papers [\textit{Z. W. Gao}, ``Modified parametrization of observers'', Proc. Am. Control Conf. 2000, 404--405 (2000)] and [\textit{Z. W. Gao} and \textit{D. W. C. Ho}, IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 46, 1840--1842 (2001; Zbl 1041.93506)].
