``This is a survey of the papers by M. G. Krein and his disciples devoted to the theory of operators in spaces with an indefinite metric and its applications. \(\ldots\) Unfortunately, we are unable to consider here the problems of priority and to trace the development of his ideas in numerous researches of other authors.'' The survey, which covers the period 1935-1985 and 36 papers, recalls the man whose ``many important results either remain unpublished until now or have been published only partially''.
