Let \(X\) be a locally Cohen-Macaulay, equidimensional subscheme of codimension \(r\) in a projective space \(\mathbb{P}^ n\) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. An important consequence of these conditions is that the deficiency modules \((M^ i)\) \((X) = \bigoplus_ t H^ i\) \((\mathbb{P}^ n, {\mathcal I}_ X (t))\), over the range \(1 \leq i \leq n - r = \dim X\), all have finite length. There are several definitions, in the literature, which measure the possible annihilators of these modules and of those of the various hyperplane sections of \(X\). The most general of these is that \(X\) is \((k,\ell)\)-Buchsbaum, \(1 \leq \ell \leq n - r\), if (a) the modules \((M^ i) (X)\) are all annihilated by all forms of degree \(k\), and (b) the deficiency modules for the scheme \(X \cap H\) are also annihilated by all forms of degree \(k\), where \(H\) is a ``sufficiently general'' linear subspace of \(\mathbb{P}^ n\) of dimension \(> n - \ell\). (In the case \(\ell = 1\) these conditions say the same thing. This definition differs slightly from that in the paper under review, correcting a small oversight. The point is that you want to be able to cut down to a curve, and no farther.) This paper deals mainly with bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and the arithmetic genus, of a \((k, \ell)\)-Buchsbaum scheme \(X\) in terms of these measures and the degree of \(X\). Special attention is given to the case where \(X\) is reduced and irreducible, where we also have the uniform position property for the zero-scheme obtained by intersecting \(X\) with a sufficiently general linear space of complementary dimension, and this allows stronger bounds to be found. This work extends to \((k, \ell)\)-Buchsbaum schemes some of the results known for arithmetically Buchsbaum and \(k\)-Buchsbaum schemes.
