    In Weiterführung ihrer in früheren Arbeiten durchgeführten Untersuchungen [cf. \textit{D. Müller} und \textit{F. Ricci}, J. Funct. Anal. 108, No. 2, 296--346 (1992; Zbl 0790.43011); \textit{D. Müller}, \textit{M. M. Peloso} und \textit{F. Ricci}, ibid. 148, No. 2, 368--383 (1997; Zbl 0887.43004); \textit{D. Müller}, \textit{M. M. Peloso} und \textit{F. Ricci}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 513, 181--234 (1999; Zbl 0937.43003)] studieren die Autoren die Frage des lokalen Auflösbarkeit von linksinvarianten Differentialoperatoren zweiter Ordnung auf der Heisenberg-Gruppe \(\mathbb{H}_n\). Dies sind die Operatoren der Form \[ {\mathcal L}_{A,\alpha}= \sum^{2n}_{j,k=1} a_{jk} V_jV_k+ i\alpha U, \] wobei \(V_1,\dots, V_{2n}\), \(U\) eine Basis der Lie-Algebra von \(\mathbb{H}_n\) mit den nichttrivialen Lie-Produkten \([V_j, V_{j+n}]= U\) für \(j= 1,\dots, n\) und \(A= (a_{jk})\) eine komplexe symmetrische Matrix ist. Die Frage der Auflösbarkeit wird vollständig beantwortet für den Fall, dass \(A\) die ``Kegelbedingung'' \[ |^tvA_2 v|\leq C\,{^tv}A_1v \] für ein \(C> 0\) und alle \(v\in\mathbb{R}^{2n}\) erfüllt; dabei bezeichnet \(A_1\) den Real- und \(A_2\) den Imaginärteil on \(A\). (Die Kegelbedingung ist z.B. sicherlich dann erfüllt, wenn \(A_1\) streng positiv definit ist.) Die (notwendigen und hinreichenden) Bedingungen für die lokale Auflösbarkeit von \({\mathcal L}_{A,\alpha}\) werden in Termen der Eigenwerte der Matrix \(S= -AJ\) mit \(J:=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 0 & I_n\\ - I_n & 0\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) ausgesprochen. Im Falle lokaler Auflösbarkeit werden Fundamentallösungen angegeben. In einer jüngeren, elektronisch vorliegenden Arbeit [siehe math., CA/0307002] hat der erste Autor die affirmativen Teile der Resultate noch beträchtlich erweitert.
